As a course author, you can establish completion rules at two distinct levels: course and module. This allows you to effectively manage learner progress and ensure content is completed within set timelines.
1. Course-Level Completion Rules
You can apply a completion rule at the course level, which sets the criteria learners must meet to mark the entire course as complete.
Steps to Set Course-Level Completion Rules:
- Go to the Course Editing page.
- Select the ‘Settings’ tab.
- Choose one of the available options: - Specific date – The course must be completed by a designated date.
- Completion rule – The due date is automatically set upon enrollment, based on the defined completion target.

- Save your changes.
The course due date will be displayed on the course tile under the "Learning" tab.
2. Module-Level Completion Rules
This functionality enables you to define prerequisites (please check the complete guide, Steps to Set Up Pre-requisites in a Course) and assign due dates, ensuring learners progress through modules in the correct sequence and within the specified timeframe.
Steps to Set Module-Level Completion Rules:
- Go to the Course Editing page.
- Select the ‘Structure’ tab.
- Select the module to which you want to add a due date.
- Choose your preferred completion rule - Specific date – The course must be completed by a designated date.
- Completion rule – The due date is automatically set upon enrollment, based on the defined completion target.

- Save your changes.
The module due date will be displayed in your progress tab.
Note: Unlike full-course due dates, will not trigger reminder notifications if the learner misses the deadline.
