Go1 Learn gives you four ways to create or organize learning: content items, courses, playlists, and awards. Choose the structure that matches what learners need to do and what you need to track.
Choose a content structure
💡 If an existing piece of content already meets your learning goal, you can assign or share it directly. Create a course, playlist, or award only when the additional structure serves a purpose.
Create a... | Use it when... | Assignment and completion | What it can contain |
You have one standalone piece of learning, such as a video, document, audio file, interactive, link, or text. | You can assign the item and track its completion. | A content item cannot contain other learning.
Learners need a structured experience with modules, a set order, prerequisites, a quiz, a submission task, or an event. | You can assign the course and track completion. Learners must complete all course content. | A course can contain content items, quizzes, submission tasks, and events. It cannot contain another course.
You want to curate learning for people to browse or share without making the collection a requirement. | A playlist cannot be assigned or completed, and it does not have its own completion reporting. Learners can still complete the individual content in it. | A playlist can contain courses and standalone content items.
You need a goal-based learning program with a target, required and elective content, external learning, learner choice, or ongoing tracking. | You can assign an award. Whether it can be completed depends on its completion rule. | An award can contain courses, standalone content items, and other awards. It cannot contain a quiz, submission task, or event directly. |
Create a content item
Choose a content item when you have one piece of learning that can stand on its own. Supported types include documents, videos, audio, interactives, links, and text.
For example, create a content item for a policy PDF, a recorded presentation, or a link to an external learning resource.
Create a course
Choose a course when learners need to work through a structured experience. Every course contains at least one module. Modules group course content but are not themselves playable.
Courses can enforce learning order within a module and make one module a prerequisite for another. Learners must complete all course content to complete the course.
Create a course when you need a quiz, submission task, or event. These content types only exist inside courses and cannot be created as standalone content.
Use a quiz to assess knowledge within the course.
Use a submission task when learners need to submit work for assessment.
Use an event for instructor-led learning. An event can have one or more sessions that learners can book.
If learners only need to attend once, create one event with multiple sessions for them to choose from. If learners must attend multiple times, create a separate event for each required attendance.
Understand standalone and course-only content
A standalone content item exists independently and can be reused in other learning structures. A course can include existing standalone content items or content created directly inside that course.
Content created directly inside a course belongs to that course. Quizzes, submission tasks, and events are always course content. If you need one of these in an award, add it to a course first, then add the course to the award.
Courses, playlists, and awards can include content from Go1’s library as well as custom content available to your organization.
Create a playlist
Choose a playlist when you want to curate a collection for browsing and sharing. A playlist works well for recommended learning around a topic, role, or skill.
Do not use a playlist when the collection must be assigned or completed. A playlist does not have its own completion status or reporting. If completion matters, create a course or award instead.
Create an award
Choose an award when learners are working toward a goal rather than completing one fixed sequence. Awards can combine courses, standalone content items, and other awards. Awards can be nested up to four levels deep.
The completion rule determines how progress works and which settings are available:
Complete one item: The learner completes the award by completing any one listed item. Use this when learners can choose between alternatives.
Reach a target: The learner works toward a target, such as a number of credits, hours, or steps. Items can be required or elective. The learner must reach the target and complete every required item.
Track ongoing learning: Learning continues to accumulate in a unit such as credits or hours, but the award is never marked complete.
Use Reach a target or Track ongoing learning when learning completed outside Go1 should count toward the award. External learning is not available with Complete one item.
If an award needs a quiz, submission task, or event, add it to a course first, then add the course to the award.
Combine structures when needed
You can combine content structures when one type does not meet the full learning goal.
For example:
Create an award containing a course when you need credits, external learning, required or elective content, or ongoing tracking alongside a quiz, submission task, event, or sequence.
Create a playlist containing courses when you want people to browse several structured learning experiences without assigning the collection.
Add standalone content items to a course when several files or resources belong in one required learning experience.
Choose the simplest structure that supports the learner experience and the completion reporting you need.
