Sometimes you need to correct or improve interactive content that is already in use. You can replace the SCORM ZIP on the existing content item without creating a new item or interrupting learners who are already in progress.
The version is selected when the learner first opens the interactive item. Learners who have already started stay on that version. Learners who have not started receive the newest version.
This article applies to SCORM packages uploaded to and played by Go1. It does not cover interactive content hosted on another website, where version behaviour is controlled by the external provider.
Before you start
You need Administrator or Content Administrator permissions to create or edit content.
Before replacing a live file:
Export the package as a SCORM
.zipfile.Test its launch, resume, completion, score, and exit behaviour.
Keep a release log containing your own version number, the Go1 content ID, the ZIP filename, and the upload date.
If the update corrects a legal, safety, or material factual issue, read Force learners onto the new version before uploading.
Add a new interactive content item
Use this flow when the content is a new title and should have its own learning history and reports.
In Go1 Learn, open Content.
Select Created by us, then Items.
Select Create.
Upload the interactive
.zipfile.Select Next: Add details.
Add the title and other content details.
Preview and test the item.
Select Publish, then choose who can access it.
Replace the ZIP on an existing item
Use this flow when the new ZIP is a revision of the same title and you want to keep the same content ID, metadata, assignments, and reporting history.
In Go1 Learn, open Content.
Select Created by us, then Items.
Open the interactive item.
Select the trash icon next to the existing file.
Upload the replacement
.zipfile.Wait for the upload and processing to finish.
Preview the item and confirm that launch and completion work as expected.
Changes in the item editor are saved automatically.
If you publish content through the Publish API, upload the new ZIP and set it as the media for the same learning object ID. Creating a different learning object ID creates a separate item and separate learning history. See Upload Content Media.
What happens after you replace the ZIP?
Learner state when the new ZIP finishes processing | Version opened next time |
Assigned or enrolled, but has never opened the interactive item | New version |
Already opened and is in progress | Existing version |
Enrolment is deleted, then the learner is enrolled or assigned again | New version, starting from the beginning |
Newly enrolled after the update | New version |
An assignment or enrolment by itself does not lock the version. The version is locked when the learner first launches the interactive content and a progression is created.
Replacing the ZIP does not overwrite existing completion records or change a learner's current status, score, or duration.
Can an in-progress learner continue where they left off?
Yes.
Go1 reopens the version associated with the learner's existing progression and keeps its SCORM bookmark and suspend data.
The exact resume point depends on the package. The SCORM content must save and restore its location and suspend data correctly. If the package does not implement resume, the learner may return to the beginning of the package even though Go1 has kept them on the same version.
Progress cannot be transferred safely from an old package version to a new one. The structure, page identifiers, or assessment data may have changed between ZIPs.
How is the version shown in reporting?
Go1 reports the learner's enrolment and completion against the content item. Standard reports include data such as status, completion, score, and duration, but they do not currently include a field showing which ZIP version the learner used.
Go1 uses an internal package-version reference to return an in-progress learner to the right content, but this is not a customer-facing report field.
If you need the completed content version as auditable evidence:
Keep your own release log for every upload.
Contact Go1 before the update to confirm an appropriate reporting or rollout approach.
Consider a separate content item when the revised content must create a clearly separate completion record. Be aware that this also creates a new content ID and separates its assignments and reporting history.
How long is the old ZIP available?
Earlier versions are kept so that learners with an existing progression can continue on the version they started. There is no setting for an administrator or Content Partner to choose an expiry date for an old ZIP.
Go1 does not currently publish a fixed minimum retention period for earlier package versions. Contact Go1 Support if you have a contractual retention requirement or need an old version removed because of a legal, security, or safety issue.
Force learners onto the new version
Replacing a ZIP does not force an in-progress learner to restart. There is no switch on the upload screen that changes this behaviour.
For content owned by your organisation, an administrator can force a learner onto the new version by deleting the learner's existing enrolment and then enrolling or assigning them again.
Deleting an enrolment is irreversible:
The learner loses their saved progress;
They restart the new ZIP from the beginning; and
The deleted enrolment and its result are removed from normal portal reporting.
Export any records you need before deleting the enrolment.
If the old version has a legal, safety, or material error
Do not rely on a normal ZIP replacement to remove the old version from learners who have already started.
Upload and test the corrected ZIP.
Identify the affected learners and customer organisations.
Export any completion or progress records that must be retained.
Delete and recreate the affected enrolments, or contact Go1 Support for help coordinating the change.
Tell affected learners that they will restart the content and explain why.
If you are a Go1 Content Partner and the item is available across customer portals, contact Go1 Support or your Go1 Content Partner contact. Content Partners cannot directly delete enrolments owned by customer organisations.
Frequently asked questions
Does replacing the ZIP create a new content item?
No. Replacing the file on the same item keeps the existing content ID, metadata, assignments, and reporting history. Creating a new item creates a different content ID.
Does it matter whether an enrolled learner has started?
Yes. A learner who has not opened the interactive item receives the newest version on first launch. An in-progress learner stays on the version they already opened.
Will an existing learner's progress move to the new ZIP?
No. Their progression stays with the old version. If their enrolment is deleted and recreated, they receive the new ZIP but start again.
Can I choose the behaviour when I upload?
No. The normal behaviour protects in-progress learners. For an exceptional forced update, the affected enrolments must be reset.
Can I see the completed ZIP version in a Go1 report?
Not in standard reports. Keep a release log and contact Go1 before rollout if package-version evidence is a compliance requirement.
Can I replace SCORM content with a different content type?
No. A replacement file must be the same content type. Create a new content item if you need to change from interactive content to video, document, link, or another type.
