How AI assessment works in Immersive Simulations

Learn how AI produces overall and behavior-level outcomes and feedback.

Immersive Simulations use AI to assess how a learner applies knowledge and judgment across their complete conversation with an AI-powered avatar. The assessment is guided by the behaviors within and assessment criteria configured for the simulation, along with any calibration input provided by an administrator.

The AI assesses the conversation as a whole rather than judging one response in isolation. There is no single required script for the learner to follow.

What guides the AI assessment

Before publishing a simulation, an administrator reviews or adjusts:

  • The workplace behaviors the simulation will assess

  • The assessment criteria for each behavior, including the minimum response needed to demonstrate it, what needs development, and what excellent performance can look like

  • Whether each behavior is marked Required

  • Additional calibration input, if provided, to help the AI apply the assessment criteria consistently

When a learner completes the published simulation, the AI uses the configured behavior criteria and calibration input to assess their conversation.

How the conversation is assessed

  1. The learner responds to the avatar using voice or text. The avatar responds based on what the learner says.

  2. When the simulation ends, the learner’s complete conversation is assessed against each configured behavior.

  3. The AI applies the assessment criteria and any calibration input to determine an outcome and feedback for every behavior.

  4. The behaviors marked Required determine the learner’s overall outcome. The learner also receives overall feedback about their performance across the simulation.

The assessment considers evidence from across the conversation. A single phrase or the learner’s final response is not assessed on its own.

How required behaviors affect the overall outcome

Every behavior receives its own outcome and feedback. The learner also receives an overall outcome and overall feedback for the simulation. However, only behaviors marked Required affect the overall outcome.

To receive an overall outcome of Understanding demonstrated, the learner must demonstrate every required behavior. If a required behavior is marked Needs development, the overall outcome is Needs development.

A behavior that is not required is still assessed and shown in the results. Its outcome does not affect the overall outcome.

For example:

Behavior

Required

Behavior outcome

Affects the overall outcome

Acknowledge the concern

Yes

Understanding demonstrated

Yes

Identify an appropriate next step

Yes

Understanding demonstrated

Yes

Offer additional follow-up support

No

Needs development

No

In this example, the learner’s overall outcome is Understanding demonstrated because they demonstrated every required behavior. The results still show that the additional behavior needs development.

Understand simulation results

Simulation results include:

  • Overall outcome and feedback: An overall result of Understanding demonstrated or Needs development, based on the required behaviors, with feedback summarizing the learner’s performance across the simulation

  • Behavior-level outcomes and feedback: An outcome and explanation for every assessed behavior, including behaviors that are not required

Together, these results show the learner’s overall performance and where they demonstrated understanding or may need further development.

What AI does not decide

The AI applies the assessment criteria and calibration input configured for the simulation. It does not set your organization’s expectations or decide how a result should be used.

Important: AI does not provide legal advice or make final employment decisions. Simulation results are intended to support learning and development and should be reviewed by an appropriate person when needed.

Who can see the results

After a learner completes a simulation, the learner and their organization’s administrators can see:

  • The overall outcome and feedback

  • The outcome and feedback for each assessed behavior

Administrators see the same assessment results and feedback shown to the learner. They cannot see the transcript of the learner’s conversation.
