Create and edit quizzes

Create quizzes, questions, and configure scoring in the Course Editor

Create quizzes within a course to assess learner understanding. Add and order questions, configure attempts and feedback, and preview the learner experience before saving.

Using MyGo1? If you're still on our legacy platform, see Create a Quiz (MyGo1).

Before you begin

  • This feature is available to all Administrators who use Go1 Learn.

  • Quizzes are created inside the course editor.

  • You can add up to 50 questions to a quiz.

  • The quiz editor does not save automatically. Make sure you click Save to keep your changes.

Create a quiz

  1. Go to Content and open the Created by us tab.

  2. Select Courses, then open the course you want to edit.

  3. Find the module where you want to add the quiz.

  4. Select Add item, then select Quiz.

  5. On the Quiz Details tab, enter a Quiz title. You can also add an optionally add a description.

  6. Configure the quiz settings:

    • Pass score required: Enter a percentage from 0% to 100%.

    • Randomise question order: Show questions in a different order for each attempt.

    • Require a correct answer to continue: Require learners to answer the current question correctly before moving on.

    • Show correct answers: Choose After each question, After submission, or Don't show correct answers.

    • Custom result messages: Add an optional message for learners who pass and an optional message for learners who do not pass.

    • Quiz attempts: Keep Unlimited attempts on, or turn it off and enter the maximum number of attempts.

  7. If learners have more than one attempt, configure these additional settings as needed:

    • Show answers from previous attempts: Let learners review the answers they submitted in previous attempts.

    • Redo incorrect questions only: On another attempt, learners are only required to repeat questions that they've answered incorrectly in their previous attempt. This setting is not available when Require a correct answer to continue is on.

  8. Select Next: Questions.

Add and organize questions

  1. On the Questions tab, select a question type:

    • Multiple choice

    • Matching

    • Fill in the blank

    • Long answer

  2. Complete the required Title and question fields. Titles can contain up to 255 characters, and question text supports rich formatting.

  3. Select Add a question to add more questions.

  4. Drag and drop question cards to change their order. Automatically generated titles such as Question 1 update to match the new order until you replace them with your own title.

  5. Open a question's More actions menu to Edit title, Duplicate, or Delete the question.

  6. When you have finished adding questions, select Next: Preview.

Add a multiple-choice question

  1. Select Multiple choice.

  2. Enter a Title and the question text.

  3. Choose Single answer or Multiple answers.

  4. Enter the answer options. A new question starts with two options, and at least one option must be marked correct.

  5. To add more options, select Add option.

  6. To give learners feedback on each option, turn on Answer feedback. Add feedback for when the option is selected and when it is not selected.

  7. If two or more options are correct, configure Allow partial credit:

    • When on, learners earn credit for each correct option they select. Missing a correct option or selecting an incorrect option does not make the whole question score zero.

    • When off, learners receive credit only when they select every correct option and no incorrect options.

Note: Answer feedback is shown only when the Quiz setting to Show correct answers is set to After each question or After submission. Selecting Don't show correct answers hides correct-answer indicators and all answer feedback.

Add a matching question

  1. Select Matching.

  2. Enter a Title and the question text.

  3. Add the matching pairs. Each item on the left must match one item on the right, and an answer cannot be reused in another pair.

  4. Add more pairs as needed.

Answers are shuffled for learners. Each correct match earns an equal share of the question's points. Incorrect matches do not subtract points.

Add a fill-in-the-blank question

  1. Select Fill in the blank.

  2. Enter a Title.

  3. Expand How to add blanks to see how free-text and dropdown blanks will look to learners and how to format them. This accordion is for guidance only and is not interactive.

  4. In the free-text Sentence field, enter your question and use square brackets to create each blank:

    • For a free-text blank, enter one accepted answer. Example: The capital of France is [Paris].

    • For a dropdown blank, enter the correct answer first, followed by incorrect options separated by commas. Example: The capital of France is [Paris, London, Berlin].

  5. Add more square-bracket groups to include multiple blanks. You can combine free-text and dropdown blanks in the same question.

  6. Review the learner preview below the sentence.

Free-text answers are not case-sensitive - if the answer is "Paris", then "PARIS" or "paris" will be marked correctly. Dropdown options are shuffled when the learner sees them.

Tip: A comma always starts another dropdown option. Do not use a comma inside a single answer option, even if you place the option in quotation marks. For example, [east, "west, another option", north] creates separate options for "west and another option".

Add a long-answer question

  1. Select Long answer.

  2. Enter a Title and the question text.

  3. Set Score required to mark as correct. New long-answer questions default to 100%.

Long-answer responses require manual assessment. A score at or above the question's pass rate marks the question correct. A lower score marks it incorrect, but the assessor's score still counts toward the learner's overall quiz result.

All questions are weighted equally. The overall quiz result is the average score across all questions and is compared with the quiz pass score.

Note: A course assessor is required if you add long-answer questions to your quiz. Add assessors from Access modal in the course editor. See Create and edit courses to learn more.

Preview the quiz

  1. Open the Preview tab.

  2. Answer and submit questions to check the learner flow, scoring, correct-answer display, and feedback.

  3. Select Retry preview to start the preview again. You can reset and repeat the preview as often as needed.

  4. Move between Quiz Details, Questions, and Preview to make changes. Your unsaved edits remain available and appear when you reopen Preview.

  5. When you are ready, select Save & exit.

Long-answer responses appear as awaiting assessment in Preview. Preview does not create an assessor score.

Note: Preview can look slightly different from the Go1 Player, but it applies the quiz and question settings you configured.

Save or leave the quiz editor

The quiz editor does not save automatically.

  • Select Save & exit to validate and save your changes.

  • If a required field is empty, it is highlighted. Complete each highlighted field before saving.

  • If you save a quiz without questions, a warning appears. You can return to the editor or save the quiz without adding questions.

  • If you close the editor with unsaved changes, choose whether to Discard changes, Keep editing, or Save & exit.

  • If you use your browser's back button or close the tab with unsaved changes, your browser warns you before leaving.

Edit a quiz that learners have started

When a learner has an in-progress attempt, you must choose how your changes affect them before the quiz editor opens. No option is selected by default.

  1. Open the course in the course editor, then select the quiz's edit action.

  2. In the Before you edit this quiz dialog, select one option:

    • Show latest changes: Clears in-progress learners' current answers. They start a fresh attempt and see the updated quiz.

    • Keep current version: Keeps in-progress learners' current answers so they can continue their existing attempt. Only learners who have not started see the updated quiz.

  3. Select Continue.

  4. Make your changes, then select Save & exit.
